WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington High School’s Lamplighters Drama Guild is proud to announce its upcoming production of Disney’s “Newsies: The Broadway Musical,” running from March 21, 2024 to March 23, 2024 at 7pm at the WHS Joanne M. Benton Auditorium.
Based on the 1992 film starring Christian Bale, “Newsies” tells the captivating true story of the 1899 newsboys’ strike in New York City. It features the journey of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of underprivileged boys, mostly orphans and runaways, selling papers to provide for themselves. When the most powerful newspaper publishers of the time raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right.
Featuring a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, including hit songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “King of New York,” this show is a high-energy musical filled with thrilling dance numbers and a timeless message of standing up for justice and unity.
Audiences of all ages are sure to be inspired by this tale of resilience, friendship, and the power of the human spirit. The cast features a talented ensemble of passionate young performers from grades 7-12, as well as a special cameo performance by WHS Vice Principal Jonathan Merenda as Teddy Roosevelt.
