OBITUARY: Edith “Edie” Mugford, 93

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Edith “Edie” Mugford, 93, of Wilmington MA, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2024.

Edie is predeceased by her son, Lee Mugford, her parents Berkess Charles Carroll and Laura (Frank) Carroll, her eight siblings, and her beloved son-in-law, Bob Ings. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Kathy Ings, her loyal granddaughters Wendy (Hilary) Witt and Tracy (Jonathan) Dillon, and her adoring great-granddaughters Reese, Peyton, and Madison, all of Billerica, MA. Her memory is also cherished by many surviving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Edie was born in Chelsea, MA on January 9, 1931, where she lived until moving to Wilmington, MA in 1955. She cherished her home on Silver Lake, where she enjoyed the endless breeze in summer, the freshness of the air in spring, the bright colors of fall, and the quiet beauty of the ice in winter. But the greatest joy of her life on the lake was watching her family swim, fish, skate, and enjoy a good lakeside meal. Her granddaughters in particular will forever remember her perfect peanut butter-and-jam sandwiches, enjoyed with wet hands and sometimes with a sprinkle of sand.

She worked for many years in the Wilmington School System in the cafeteria at the Shawsheen School where she was proud to have “fed plenty of children” every school year. She was also a devout member of the congregation of the Abundant Life Church in Wilmington, MA, attending worship services and participating in Bible Study, music performances, and more.

She reveled in being a grandmother. Nanny never missed a chance to be at a softball game, swim meet, dance recital, school event, prom, graduation – wherever her grandkids were, she was not far behind. Friday nights were a particular highlight for many years, spending the evening with Wendy and Tracy grabbing a bite and doing some shopping. And the best Friday nights included a sleepover at the lake and a Golden Girls marathon.

Her full life was punctuated by opportunities to travel, visiting California, Alaska, Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, and the Caribbean. In her later years, she traveled less but continued to live life to the fullest, enjoying her weekly ‘coffee clatch’ at the local Dunkin’, browsing a clearance rack for the next ‘good find,’ playing a fiery game of dominoes with her family, visiting Rockport and strolling the Neck, and spending lazy afternoons at her daughter’s pool watching the kids swim and enjoying a good ol’ Kayem hotdog (preferably on a toasted bun with Howard’s Piccalilli and onions).

Her quick wit and sly saltiness caught many by surprise but became a big part of her signature charme along with her deep kindness and instinctiveness to comfort. From her children to her grandchildren to her son-in-law to her nieces and nephews to friends and beyond – her ability to accept and show kindness was remarkable.

Edie will be sorely missed by many, but never forgotten.

Family and friends gathered for a celebration of life to honor Edith’s memory and legacy on Wednesday, February 28th with Visitation from 4:00-6:30 p.m. followed by a Service and time of sharing at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Edith’s memory to Care One at Wilmington, 750 Woburn Street, Wilmington, MA 01887, please include in memo Resident Council Fund.
