Below is a press release from Wilmington High School:
WILMINGTON, MA – Wilmington High School has earned the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded girls’ access in AP computer science courses.
More than 1,100 institutions achieved either 50% or higher female representation in one of the two AP computer science courses or a percentage of the female computer science exam takers meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population during the 2022-23 school year. In 2023, Wilmington High school was one of 834 schools nationwide recognized in the category of AP Computer Science Principles (CSP). Only 17 schools in Massachusetts earned this recognition.
AP Computer Science Principles is an introductory computer science course aimed at exposing students to the wide variety of topics in the field. Last year, with the help of the Mathematics Curriculum Team Leader Mary Beth Valuk, WHS was awarded a $20,000 grant from Project Lead the Way to revamp and expand the Computer Science Curriculum. As a result, WHS has expanded beyond Computer Science Principles, to additionally offer AP Computer Science A, a first year college course focusing in Java programming, and two introductory Computer Science Essentials courses.
