WILMINGTON, MA — Joseph McMenimen, Sr., “Joe Mac,” passed away in his sleep after a lengthy illness.
Joe is survived by his children: Christine McMenimen and her fiancé, Marcos Mason, and Joseph P. McMenimen, Jr. and his fiancée, Jane Faccenda. Joe was married to the late Linda (Scalfati) McMenimen for 57 years. They resided in Wilmington for all of those years, as they raised their family, supported the town, and enjoyed their neighborhood on Grace Drive.
Born and raised in East Cambridge, Joe was the youngest of four children of George C. McMenimen and Mary (Dilworth) McMenimen. He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary (Harrington), Nancy (Briand) and George, Jr. “Jo Jo” was a loving son, a cherished brother, a trusted nephew, and a favorite cousin and uncle to the McMenimen, Dilworth, Briand, Brown, Scalfati, Khoury and Kilroy families.
Joe was a graduate of Boston College High School (’53) and Boston College (’57), and he was very proud to be a Double Eagle. He began his career as an estimator with Warren Brothers (Saugus, MA), and retired from Tilcon (New Britain, CT) as the company’s Vice President. He was well respected by his colleagues and crews over the years as he built a mental map of every street and road in eastern Massachusetts long before there was such a thing as Google Maps. Joe Mac was his call name over their two-way radio, and all who worked with him could not name a better guy!
Joe was an engaged member of the Wilmington community. He coached softball teams, was a sought-after umpire, and volunteered as a member of the Wilmington Board of Appeals. Joe was always friendly around town—playing the lottery at the corner store, sipping coffee with cronies at Dunkin Donuts, and running errands for Linda at Market Basket, CVS, and the Wilmington Memorial Library. Always a gentleman with a hello and a smile, everyone always asked for Joe!
In his retirement, Joe followed his passions for golf and travel. He served has President of the Lexington Golf Club for two years and worked as a tour guide/chaperone for Golf Vacations. Joe was known for planning the ultimate golf trips for friends, family and golf buddies—Myrtle Beach, Ireland, and Pinehurst to name a few. He would book the flights, the hotels, the golf courses, the dinner reservations, and reserve the rental cars—two mini-vans that each fit four sets of golf clubs.
Most of all, Joe was devoted to his wife, Linda! Joe loved to travel with Linda. They enjoyed many trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and their favorite place, Bermuda—and somehow the golf clubs were always in tow. There were also wonderful memories of winters in Naples, Florida, with friends and family visiting for weeks at a time. They were each other’s caretakers in their later years, and such a loving couple—a true example of the meaning of marriage—full of compromise, affection, laughter, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part.
Funeral arrangements will be provided by Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Avenue, Wilmington. Visiting hours are scheduled for Friday, January 19th from 4:00PM-7:00PM, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, Wilmington, on Saturday, January 20th at 10:00AM. Burial will conclude at Wildwood Cemetery.
