WILMINGTON, MA — Joan E. (Carter) Robinson, age 91, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away on January 13, 2024.
Joan was born on August 18, 1932, in Boston, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Kenneth and Lillian M. (Davidson) Carter. Joan grew up in Brookline and graduated from Brookline High School. Following high school, she attended Fisher College where she earned her associate degree.
As a young adult, Joan worked in Boston as a secretary for the telephone company, AT &T. Throughout her life, she also worked at Stone & Webster, Charles River Labs, and Portex Industries, where she retired as a supervisor.
Joan married her husband, William S. Robinson, on May 18, 1956; they lived in Brighton for a few years before settling in Wilmington. As a child, Joan’s family summered in Wilmington, and she always had a special place in her heart for the area. In 1960, Joan and Bill settled in Wilmington, where they raised their three children, Diane, Bill, and John.
Joan was a “hands on” Mom; she rode bikes, played catch, and attended every school or sporting event. Joan loved spending time with her children, and she was equally delighted when she became “Nana” to her two grandchildren, Sarah, and Jeff. Joan always kept her family close; she had a collection of photos that she kept in her wallet and often shared stories of her family with her friends.
In her spare time, Joan enjoyed sewing, crafting, and making dolls, especially Cabbage Patch dolls. Joan spent many summers at Winnipesaukee Lake in New Hampshire and loved to reminisce about her memories of those summers.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late William S. Robinson, devoted mother of Diane Rourke & her husband John of Lowell, Bill Robinson & his wife Lisa of Westford, and John Robinson & his wife Tara of Medford, loving “Nana” of Sarah Sala & her husband Tony and Jeff Valerio & his wife Dana, “Great-Nana” of Jason and Dani Rose, cherished daughter of the late Kenneth and Lillian M. (Davidson) Carter, dear sister of Stanley Carter & his wife Cheryl of Middleboro and the late Kenneth Carter & his late wife Maureen. Joan is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Wednesday, January 17th from 10:00 -12:00 noon immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
Memorial donations in Joan’s name may be made to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
