Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:
WILMINGTON, MA — Richard J. McHugh, Sr. “Dick”, or more fondly known as “Bozo” by his family and friends, passed away unexpectedly at home on November 23, 2023; he was 90 years old.
Bozo was born in Woburn, MA, on April 22, 1933; he was the dear son of the late Peter and Gertrude Beatrice (Cashman) McHugh. Bozo was raised and educated in Wilmington; he was a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1951.
Bozo was inducted into the United States Army on April 21, 1953, during the Korean War; he served overseas with the 3835th Stuttgart Det. unit in Germany. Bozo received the OCC Med. Ger., the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal; he was honorably discharged in March of 1955 and returned home to his family.
Bozo continued to serve when he went to work as Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) Police Officer. He saw many changes in law enforcement throughout his career and retired following years of dedicated service to the State of Massachusetts.
Bozo married “Maude” Maureen McKenna in 1963 and together they shared many wonderful times throughout their 56 years of marriage before Maureen’s untimely passing in 2019. Bozo was a devoted husband, dad, and Grampy, who was very proud of the family he and Maureen created.
Bozo loved to travel with family and friends; some more memorable trips were to Ireland, Aruba, and their many cruises all over the Caribbean. Bozo and Maureen loved to visit Florida and made many friends during their visits; following retirement they became “snowbirds” to escape the harsh New England winters.
In his spare time, Bozo, could be found out in his shed where he “tinkered” with tools and wood and let his creative, talented side show; he made beautiful birdhouses and countless construction projects throughout the years.
Bozo was a “good guy” and a great friend who would do anything to help those he loved. He also enjoyed making people laugh with his dry sense of humor and quick wit. He will forever live on in the hearts of those he loved.
Bozo was the beloved husband of the late Maureen (McKenna) McHugh, devoted father of Richard (Richie) McHugh Jr. & his wife Mimi of Tewksbury, Thomas (Tommy) McHugh & his wife Laurie, William (Billy) McHugh & his wife Barbie, and Heather Fuller & her husband Steven all of Wilmington. Loving “Grampy” of Amanda, Patrick, Keith & wife Sarah, Shannon & husband Chris, Shelby, Payton, Meagan, Jennifer, and Paige. Dear son of the late Peter and Gertrude (Cashman) McHugh, brother of the late Robert McHugh. Bozo is further survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law as well as his many nieces, nephews, and their families.
