Below is a press release from Wilmington Town Manager Jeff Hull:
WILMINGTON, MA — At the Select Board’s meeting on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, an individual suggested during the “Public Comment” portion of the meeting that as Town Manager, I required employees to obtain the COVID vaccine or they would be fired. That allegation could not be further from the truth.
During the Board meeting, I indicated that “Public Comments” is intended to offer members of the public the opportunity to comment, that there is no obligation for me or members of the Board to respond and that the comments could be taken under advisement. Responding to the speaker’s allegation at that point would have undercut my own advice to the Board.
Employees were never directed to obtain the COVID vaccine or risk termination. Instead, employees were informed about how to obtain details about the vaccine, where they could obtain the vaccine and were advised to consult with their physician about the merits of getting vaccinated. The decision as to whether to obtain the vaccination was left entirely to the discretion of each employee.
