4 NEW CAPTAINS: Wilmington Fire Department Promotions Announced

WILMINGTON, MA — At this week’s Select Board Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull announced that lieutenants Thomas Ceres, Brooke Green, Erik Nansel, and Frederick Ryan have been appointed to serve as new captains within the Wilmington Fire Department.

Hull explained that — as a result of changes that were negotiated within the Firefighter Union’s collecting bargaining agreement — four captain positions have been created — one for each of the four work shifts.

“This change will strengthen the incident command structure at emergency scenes. Each shift will now be staffed with one captain, one lieutenant, and nine firefighters,” Hull explained in a memo provided to the Select Board. “This change has not resulted in additional personnel but instead reduces the number of shift lieutenants from two per shift to one per shift…. The positions of fire prevention lieutenant and fire operations lieutenant remain unchanged.”

The Town followed Civil Service requirements for promotions, and utilized a third-party, state-approved consultant to establish an assessment center. Of all the candidates, Ceres, Green, Nansel and Ryan received the highest scores, which were reviewed and validated by the State’s Human Resources Division.

“I extend my congratulations to each of them and my appreciation to each of the individuals who committed their time and effort towards pursuing career advancement,” Hull added.

A formal swearing-in ceremony for the four new captains will take place on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 10am in the Public Safety Building’s training room.
