BREAKING: Town Manager Jeff Hull Announces His Intention To Retire On October 31 After 36 Years Of Service To Town

WILMINGTON, MA — After 36 years of service to Wilmington, Town Manager Jeff Hull has announced his decision to retire.

The news was shared in a statement issued by Select Board Chair Gary DePalma to Wilmington Apple on Thursday evening.

“The Select Board has been informed today that Town Manager Jeff Hull intends to retire on October 31, 2023,” wrote DePalma. “The Board appreciates his service to the Town and extends best wishes to Jeff and his family.”

DePalma stated the Select Board will hold a meeting in the near future to determine “next steps.” Due to the timing of Hull’s announcement, the matter is currently not on the agenda for the Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 26, 2023.

Hull, 62, has helped run Wilmington since 1987, serving as Assistant Town Manager for 25 years (1987-2012) and Town Manager for the past 11 years (2012-present).

Prior to his time in Wilmington, Hull served as an administrative officer in Ayer for 4 years. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Public Administration from Bryant University, and a Masters in Public Administration from Northeastern University.

Hull signed a new 3-year agreement 18 months ago on January 24, 2022. The contract covered October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2024. Hull intends to depart with a little less than one year on his current deal.

There were clues in the agreement that Hull’s retirement may be on the horizon, including the Select Board agreeing to pay out Hull’s unused vacation time as Assistant Town Manager in three installments.

Hull, well-respected for his financial acumen, has been at the forefront of much of the town’s progress since the mid-1980’s. Most recently, Hull shepherded the upcoming construction of a new Town Hall/School Administration Building and new Senior Center. Other upcoming potential projects in the pipeline that Hull has had a hand in include the construction of a new elementary school to replace 1-3 schools on the north-side of town, and the potential purchase of land in North Wilmington to construct a fire substation and prospective passive & active recreational opportunities.

Wilmington Apple hopes to interview Town Manager Jeff Hull, prior to his retirement, to discuss his remarkably long tenure as the town’s leader and the many accomplishments he and his team achieved.

This article will be updated if Town Manager Hull responds to a request for comment.
