43 Wilmington Police Officers Complete Interactive, Scenario-Based Training In Middlesex Sheriff’s Office’s Mobile Training Center

WILMINGTON, MA — Forty-three Wilmington police officers recently completed interactive, scenario-based training, Wilmington Police Chief Joseph Desmond and Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced this week.

The training – facilitated by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) – was conducted September 26-30 in Wilmington.

Utilizing the MSO’s Mobile Training Center (MTC), Wilmington officers were put through a series of video-based scenarios focused on the effective use of de-escalation skills, as well as responses to disturbances and active shooter incidents. Following each scenario, Wilmington PD trainers and officers discussed and assessed the responses.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity for such advanced training through the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office,” said Chief Desmond. “The scenario-based technology gives our officers the ability to combine all aspects of their training in real world situations which is often difficult to replicate in traditional training environments.”

“Each day, members of the MSO work with law enforcement partners to enhance public safety across our 54 cities and towns,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “By working with Chief Desmond to facilitate this interactive, scenario-based training, we are helping officers in Wilmington and many other communities reinforce skills and techniques that are critical to effective policing – particularly around communication and de-escalation.”

In 2021, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office worked with 32 agencies to facilitate the training including the police departments in Arlington, Malden, Medford & Stoneham.
