WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington residents are invited to attend a “Peaceful Walk For Justice” this Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 3pm on the Wilmington Town Common.
Participants will congregate at the Common and collectively walk towards Rotary Park. Participants are encouraged to bring signs, wear black, and, due to COVID-19, wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
“I have found myself utterly heartbroken by the continuous events of racial injustice, systematic oppression, and rampant discrimination that plague our black communities,” writes organizer Maggie Brown in her announcement. “As difficult as the conversation may be, I believe that it is time to start addressing these topics of social injustice in the community that we call home.”
Brown, a Wilmington native and third-year law student at Georgetown University, stresses this will be a peaceful walk and she does not intend to obstruct traffic. She will reach out to the Police Department to make them aware of her plans.
“It is my hope that this will be a peaceful event to bring the community together in a time of mourning and tragedy,” Brown tells Wilmington Apple. “This is a 100% peaceful event and violence, of any means, will not be accepted or tolerated. I am not sure how many people will actually show up, but my intention is to utilize the sidewalks to walk in an organized fashion. I do not want to block traffic by any means or create obstructions in the roadway.”
[UPDATE: The police plan to close the roadway during the walk to maximize attendee safety and the management of social distancing.]
Similar peaceful events were held nearby in Tewksbury on Sunday and Andover on Monday.
“This is unequivocally a peaceful event and is no way aimed at instigating trouble,” reiterates Brown.
Anyone with a question about the event can contact Brown at mcb321@georgetown.edu.
