Below is information from the Reading Municipal Light Department:
READING, MA — Residential monthly bills are likely to be higher than normal during this time as increased remote work and education is being done in the home. Below are some simple steps you can take to be more energy efficient:
- Turn off lights and other items when they’re not in use.
- Turn the heat/air conditioning down a few degrees, and use a programmable or smart thermostat to more efficiently manage the temperature in your home (check out available thermostats for purchase in RMLD’s online store).
- Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LED light bulbs (check out available LED bulbs for purchase in RMLD’s online store).
- Only run your dishwasher when full (but not overloaded), and skip the heat dry cycle.
- Use warm or cold water when washing clothes, and set the water level appropriately based on the amount of clothes you’re washing.
- Use lower heat settings when drying clothes even if the drying cycle is longer, and dry towels and heavier cottons separate from lighter-weight clothes.

Schedule A VIRTUAL Home Energy Assessment
A home energy assessment (HEA) evaluates the home and offers recommendations to increase energy efficiency. In response to COVID-19, RMLD’s provider, Energy New England (ENE), quickly made the shift from an in-home energy assessment to a virtual assessment. These virtual HEAs are now available to RMLD residential customers.
By using the video feature on iPhone or Android phones, ENE Advisors can capture information about the home needed to create a comprehensive Home Energy Assessment Report without a site visit. A follow-up call is scheduled to review the report and prioritize a short- and long-term savings plan. LED bulbs and other energy-saving measures normally installed at the time of the audit are either delivered at a later time or mailed. The virtual assessment typically takes 45-60 minutes to complete.
Visit ENE’s website or call 888-772-4242 to request an appointment.
