Superintendent Brand Provides Update After Governor Closes Schools For Rest Of School Year Due To COVID-19

Below is a message emailed by Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand on Tuesday afternoon:

Good Afternoon WPS Families, Staff & Students,

In case you have not yet heard as of yet, the Governor Baker announced [Tuesday] that all public and private schools would remain closed for the duration of the 2019-20 school year. While this decision is not perhaps surprising to many, given the ongoing developments surrounding this ongoing health crisis, this nevertheless is difficult news for us all to hear. This decision impacts our path ahead and there will be much to work out and address in the days and weeks before us. While remote learning will most certainly continue in the Wilmington Public Schools, we will also be closely monitoring the anticipated direction and guidance that will be forthcoming from Commissioner Riley of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education regarding the overall situation for our schools. I am well aware of the fact that, with the status of our operations solidified and that schools will not re-open, my leadership team and our staff have many things to decide upon and address and I assure you that we will attend to all that is necessary.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to our teachers, administrators and staff if you need any support or assistance. While school may not be physically in session, your ability to access and contact our staff remains unchanged during this time. Our commitment to maintaining our communication with our families and students is at the forefront and even more important now as we seek to keep connected and help us all navigate this very difficult time.

Finally, I know that this is an incredibly challenging and emotionally difficult time for all of us and I want to remind you of the list of resources that are listed on the COVID-19 section of our website https://www.wpsk12.com/coronavirus that may be of assistance to you.

Sincerely,
Glenn Brand
Superintendent of Schools
