WILMINGTON, MA — Last night, the Wilmington School Committee voted unanimously to eliminate April vacation next week and continue remote learning. (No learning will take place on Monday due to Patriots Day.)
Members stated they did not want to break the momentum being built up around remote learning or the routines that students and teachers are beginning to develop.
The vote was cast after the district surveyed parents and staff. 61% of parents and 60% of teachers preferred eliminating the break and continuing with remote learning uninterrupted.
“Staff and parents/guardians clearly want remote learning to continue next week,” said School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand, who recommended the School Committee eliminate April vacation.
Brand noted that a majority of districts in the area have decided to continue remote learning next week. School Committee member David Ragsdale added that, according to a tally being kept by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, a majority of school districts across making similar decisions.
As a result of eliminating April vacation week, Wilmington’s last day of school will now be Monday, June 15, 2020, instead of Friday, June 19, 2020.
