SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: School Committee Votes Not To Participate In State’s School Choice Program

WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s meeting, the Wilmington School Committee voted to not participate in the state’s School Choice Program for the 2020-2021 school year.

“The school choice program in Massachusetts allows parents to send their children to a school in a district/community other than that where they reside,” explained Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand in a memo. “When school choice is exercised, the ‘sending district’ pays tuition to the ‘receiving district.'”

Brand noted that, according to a recent study by the Pioneer Institute of Public Policy Research, the choice program has grown steadily in Massachusetts — from less than 1,000 students in 1992 to more than 16,000 students in 2017.

“In recent years, the School Committee has decided not to participate in the School Choice Program due to the lack of available space for students outside of Wilmington,” wrote Brand. “At the present time, there continues to be some uncertainty as to the immediate and long term realities across our district related to enrollment.”

Brand also cited pending decisions around the future school building configurations with the possibility of future school construction and renovation as a reason to not participate in the school choice program.
