WILMINGTON, MA — At Wednesday night’s School Committee Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand announced plans to change a longstanding practice in the school district.
“In our planning and preparation for next year, class placement information will be finalized and released to our parents/guardians in early August through Aspen… for all of our elementary schools as well as the middle school],” Brand wrote in a memo to the School Committee, which he summarized at the meeting.
Brand noted this is a departure to how things have been done in the past.
“Traditionally in Wilmington, class placement information at the elementary level has been finalized and included as part of the end-of-year report card information shared with families in June,” explained Brand.
Under the current practice, changes can frequently be made to a student’s original placement during summer vacation.
These changes, according to Brand, can occur “in response to additional students moving in after July 1, the receipt of additional information brought to the school’s attention about a particular match between children and/or specific educational needs of a child, and the always possible need for a school to add another teaching section due to enrollment growth.”
Brand wishes to avoid having to reassign students to different teachers, acknowledging it can be difficult for everyone involved. By waiting much later in the summer to make the initial class placements, this problem will be mitigated.
Brand added that the distribution class placement information will be paired with other important information that will be readily used by parents/guardians as they prepare for the upcoming year, including the parent/student handbook.
