SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: Woburn Street’s Kristen Tozza & West’s Bonnie Gorrasi Receive WEF Grants

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Educational Foundation recently announced the recipients of this year’s Joanne Benton Educator Exploration Grants — Kristen Tozza and Bonnie Gorrasi.

The grants, named in memory of late Wilmington School Superintendent Joanne Benton, enable educators to bring their explorations to the classroom.  The grants allows teachers the opportunity to travel and experience the subjects they are teaching to the classroom in a hands-on environment.  Teachers then bring what they have learned to the classroom, engaging children and enhancing their learning experience.

Kristen Tozza, a Grade 2 Teacher at the Woburn Street Elementary School, was awarded $1,300 to travel to Glacier National Park. Her experience with strengthen her classroom’s science curriculum (evaluation science) and social studies curriculum. She will also journal her experience as part of the writer’s workshop curriculum.

Bonnie Gorrasi, a Grade 4 Teacher at the West Intermediate School, was awarded $1,500 to travel to a mindfulness retreat in Oregon. She will learn new practices in mindfulness, which will aid her to better tackle classroom challenges that arise through compassion, connection and self-awreness.

The Wilmington School Committee formally accepted both grants at Wednesday night’s meeting.
