Below is a new joint statement from the Town’s Emergency Management Committee, led by Fire Chief Bill Cavanaugh, on behalf of and with the collaboration of Senator Bruce Tarr, Representative David Robertson, Wilmington Board of Selectmen Chair Greg Bendel, Representative Ken Gordon, Wilmington Town Manager Jeff Hull, the Wilmington Board of Health, and the Town’s Emergency Management Committee:
WILMINGTON, MA — Last night, out of deep concern and consideration for the residents, family members and staff at Adviniacare in Wilmington, the state legislative delegation and town officials developed and sent a unified request for assistance to the COVID Command Center, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of Public Health. The language of our request is below:
“The Town of Wilmington and our legislative delegation are appealing in the most strenuous way possible to your agencies to conduct an assessment of the operational and clinical capabilities at AdviniaCare on 90 West Street in Wilmington. In light of the escalating number of patients and staff testing positive for COVID-19 and the recent report of seven (7) COVID related deaths, there are very serious concerns that the facility lacks adequate resources with respect to staffing, including skilled medical staff, to provide the level of care required in this current state of emergency.
It is our strong collective belief that determining the types of resources that are required to supplement resources currently available to AdviniaCare and providing those resources is both critical and time sensitive. We await your timely response. Thank you”
Our request was met with a prompt and receptive response from all of those entities, and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. Because of the strength of that response we have confidence that the situation is getting the focus and attention it deserves at this time.
The town’s response to the situation at AdviniaCare is necessarily focused on alerting the agencies and people in state government who have responsibility for the licensure, management and care delivery at this facility, and those now engaged in response to the COVID-29 Pandemic. We will continue to work with them to secure appropriate resources and actions, and to coordinate their delivery in a timely and effective manner.
We will provide updates as information and circumstances warrant them.
