GRANTSVILLE, MARYLAND — Dr. Anne Buzzell, Ph.D., 97, of Grantsville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born April 27, 1922, in Wilmington, Mass., Anne was the daughter of the late Philip B. Buzzell and Rhoda H. (White) Buzzell. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Daniel Buzzell, and her sister, Mary Louise Young, a long-time Cumberland resident.
Anne earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and received her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Cornell University. After graduation, she was a research assistant for Yale University. Anne went on to be a scientific civilian contractor at Fort Detrick Army Base for approximately 25 years.
After retirement, Anne was an avid world traveler with her sister, Mary Louise, and together they traveled to 32 countries. She also loved to spend her time reading and was a very talented artist as well. Anne wrote poetry and won multiple awards. She loved to play Bridge and Scrabble and was tough to beat! In addition to her many lifelong accomplishments, Anne also had a playful side and loved to collect various ceramic and stuffed animal turtles. Many of her most cherished were gifts from Anne’s wonderful personal care givers.
Anne is survived by her nieces and nephews, Philip Young and wife, Donna, Ruth Anne Sheetz and husband, Bob, Susan Young Mullineaux and husband, Dick, and Judy Squires and husband, John; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com), on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at noon with Pastor Bruce McBride officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
