SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: Principal Updates At West, Shawsheen, Woburn St., Boutwell & Wildwood

WILMINGTON, MA — Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand updated the Wilmington School Committee on some leadership personnel matters over its past two meetings:

West Intermediate Principal Search

Dr. Brand recently announced details of the West Intermediate’s Principal Search following the announcement of Principal Dennis Shaw’s upcoming retirement.

A Search Committee has been formed to actively receive and screen initial applications and make recommendations to the Superintendent as to which candidates should advance in the process. The Committee consists of parents (Shannon Sheridan-Geldart, Jennifer Jackson and Brian MacDonald), teachers (Renee Deschene, Michelle LeVesque, and Catherine Maiella), a district administrator (Christine Murray), and a building administrator (Suzanne Sullivan). The Committee’s first meeting is set for Monday, March 2, 2020.

The candidates who advance to become finalists will spend an entire day in the district where they will meet with staff, students, parents/guardians and the district leadership team. Conversely, time will be spent visiting each candidates’ current district to gather information.

Parents and guardians will have an opportunity to meet each finalist at a public form and then offer feedback. The district previously sent out an online survey to gather feedback on the qualities, characteristics and experiences that people are looking for in the next West Principal — 51 responses were received.

Finalists are scheduled to be revealed on March 27, 2020, with the ultimate selection announced during the week of April 13, 2020. The next principal would be expected to start on or around August 1, 2020.

Woburn Street Elementary & Shawsheen Elementary Assistant Principals

Dr. Brand recently announced that Interim Assistant Principals Kevin Welch (Shawsheen) and Sheila Burke (Woburn Street) have both been named permanent Assistant Principals of their schools effective March 1, 2020.

“Mr. Welch and Mrs. Burke have been welcome additions to their respective communities and, based upon direct feedback from Principals Lisa King and Suzanne Sullivan, as well as feedback from other stakeholders, it seems quite clear that both Mr. Welch and Mrs. Burke are a very good fit for their communities and have become valuable members of the leadership teams of their schools,” Brand told the School Committee.

Welch took over for Ms. Erin Burke after her resignation in the spring of 2019. Burke took over for Mr. Frank Ferriero following his retirement at the end of last school year.

Boutwell & Wildwhood Early Childhood Centers Directors

Dr. Brand recently announced that Early Childhood Center Directors Kristen Walsh (Boutwell) and Charlotte King (Wildwood) will have their titles changed to “Principal” effective July 1, 2020.

“After the last year and a half, I’ve been in their buildings regularly and learned of their work. At both a 20,000 ft. level and 10 ft. level, they – in every way – serve as principals,” Brand told the School Committee, who also noted that the receiving schools no longer have any authority over the centers. “Their schools have DOE numbers — they are schools unto themselves…. The name change seems appropriate.”

Brand added there will be no change to either contract aside from the position title.
