Wilmington Library Announces Renovation That Will Add 2 Small Rooms, Done Without Taxpayer Money

Below is an announcement from the Wilmington Memorial Library:

WILMINGTON, MA — In 2015, Wilmington Memorial Library (WML) was informed that it was a beneficiary of a bequest of $350,000 from the Barbara Johnson Trust. Ms. Johnson grew up in Wilmington and was an avid library user. She moved to West Coast where she lived for many years. The Board of Library Trustees subsequently voted to use these funds for a “significant library improvement.” Given the recommendation of the Town’s Facility Master Plan Report, building construction improvements for the Library are not scheduled to be addressed until 2034. Thus a feasibility study was undertaken to ascertain to what extent these trust funds could be used to improve the library facility.

Given the results of the study, the library plans to remove one of the two front stairwells to create a small room on the second floor and a small room on the first floor. The second floor space will be used as a reading area for parents and children as well as for use by teens after school. The first floor space will be used for one on one Tech Help sessions.  The project is scheduled to begin Saturday, January 11 with the demolition of the stairwell. Given the expected noise that the demolition will create, the library will be closed that Saturday. Going forward, the renovation project should last four to six weeks with minimal impact on library operations and the library is expected to be open normal business hours. We are thankful for this generous donation from the Barbara Johnson Trust and look forward to having these new spaces in the library!
