WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand announced the details of the district’s upcoming search for its next permanent Athletic Director.
“This will be a wide-open search that will be advertised broadly. The search process will be inclusive of key stakeholders, thorough, and balanced in terms of gathering feedback and information on potential candidates,” Brand wrote in a memo to the Committee. “This process will provide opportunities throughout for staff and community input that will be considered in the overall decision-making process and my ultimate selection of the next Director.”
Brand outlined four key phases to the search:
- The Search Committee will receive and screen initial applications and make recommendations to the Superintendent about which candidates should advance.
- Finalist candidates will spend a full day in the district where they will meet with staff, students, parents/guardians, and the district’s leadership team.
- School officials will visit the finalist candidates’ current district to gather additional information.
- The Superintendent will select the next Athletic Director from the finalist candidates.
The Search Committee, which will be run by the district’s Human Resources Director, will consist of two high school students, two parents/guardians, two high school coaches, one high school teacher, one high school administrator, and one district administrator.
WHS students, coaches and teachers interested in serving on the Search Committee should contact HR Director Andrea Stern-Armstrong at andrea.armstrong@wpsk12.com by Friday, December 6, 2019.
Parents/guardians interested in serving should contact Sue Murray at susan.murray@wpsk12.com by Friday, December 6, 2019. Selection of parents/guardians will be done through a lottery overseen by the WHS School Council.
Brand also provided a general overview of the search’s timeline:
- December 2, 2019 — Position Advertised
- January 4, 2020 — Deadline To Receive Applications
- January 13, 2020 – January 24, 2019 — Initial Interviews Conducted By Search Committee
- Week of January 27 — Finalists Announced
- Week of February 3 — Finalists visit Wilmington
- Week of February 10 — Site Visits To Finalists’ Home Districts
- Week of February 24 — Finalist Announced
“This timeline will position us very well to be competitive, if not leading, every other district in the area,” Brand told the Committee. “I wouldn’t say this is too early. It’s not late. It’s well-timed.”
Brand stressed there’d be opportunities for the community and staff to be involved in the process, including through a survey that will go out in early December and through “Meet The Finalists” forums in early February.
