Below is a recent announcement from the Wilmington Police Department:
WILMINGTON, MA — Scams against homeowners are very common in this area! Before hiring someone to do work on your home, take some time to ensure you are hiring a reputable contractor. The Town of Wilmington requires that door to door solicitors be registered with the Wilmington Police Department. Please report any suspicious activity to the WPD at 978-658-5071 or by calling 911.
Unscrupulous contractors target unsuspecting homeowners to try and make some quick money by doing substandard work or sometimes not work at all. Be wary of contractors who show up at your door uninvited offering to repave your driveway, fix your roof, or make other home repairs.
If a contractor shows up at your home uninvited:
- Ask for references
- Request a bid in writing and compare bids with other contractors
- Check the Better Business Bureau website
- Get a written contract before the work starts and read the fine print!
- Don’t pay cash
- Don’t put down a large deposit
- Don’t be pressured!
