WILMINGTON, MA — The Town of Wilmington has honored its fallen hero Sean Collier in a number of ways, including a playground at Silver Lake and a tree of life at Rotary Park. Now, a memorial stone for Collier can be found at Wilmington High School, where he graduated from in 2004.
A brief dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, October 12, 2019 in the high school’s courtyard, where the memorial stone is located. Wilmington Police, MIT Police, members of the Collier family, school officials, including WHS Principal Linda Peters, and town officials, including Town Manager Jeff Hull, were in attendance. WBZ Boston was also on hand.
2019 Wilmington High graduate Joe Wilson was responsible for the memorial stone’s installation. Wilson, who comes from a police family, chose to pursue the installation of the memorial stone as part of his senior project. He fundraised more than $6,000 online to make his vision a reality.
“My purpose in dedicating this memorial is to keep Sean’s memory alive and well at Wilmington High School,” Wilson previously announced. “[The memorial] will help generations of younger students recognize the sacrifices of our heroes that protect us day to day and the sacrifices that each and every one of them make and make sure that Sean is never forgotten.”
“I was honored to be at the dedication of the new memorial for Officer Sean Collier organized by Joe Wilson,” remarked Selectman Chair Greg Bendel after the ceremony. “Thank you Joe for working to make this tribute come to life. Now all future generations who pass through our High School courtyard will be reminded of Sean’s life & his service.”
