NOTICE: Wilmington School System Looking To Identify Wilmington Students NOT Enrolled In Wilmington Public Schools That May Have Disabilities

WILMINGTON STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Now that school is open, the Wilmington Student Support Services Department would like to inform the Wilmington Community about the services provided under State and Federal Special Education regulations. In accordance with federal special education law, IDEA 2004, the Wilmington Public Schools are conducting child find activities for students who live in Wilmington and attend private schools located in Wilmington. This federal requirement also applies to Wilmington students who attend private schools outside of Wilmington. A variety of services and programs are available to students between the ages of 3 and 22 who have been identified as having a disability. This law provides for in-depth child evaluations, and appropriate treatment and support services.

Child find activities require the Wilmington Public Schools to evaluate students who, based upon the suspicion of the presence of a disability, may meet special education eligibility criteria. The Wilmington Public School District is also committed to identifying children before their third birthday in order to provide early intervention services for three and four year-olds. If you suspect that your child, at any age, may need an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services, you may request an evaluation, at no cost, at your district school.
