WILMINGTON, MA — Below are 5 things to do in Wilmington on Saturday, September 28, 2019:

#1) 1st Annual Wilmington Pickleball Tournament 

The Wilmington Recreation Department has organized its inaugural Pickleball Tournament at 9am at the Town Hall’s Pickeball Courts.

Registered players will be randomly paired on the day of the tournament. Each player will be guaranteed at least three matches. Players must have previous playing experience and know how to keep score. Players must be Wilmington residents.

Registration costs $25. Register online on the Recreation Department’s website (click “Register Online”) or by visiting the Recreation Department’s Office in Town Hall’s Room 8 on Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

#2) Middlesex DA’s Back To School Safety Day

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, in partnership with Lahey Health, Winchester Hospital, the Woburn Police Department and Woburn Fire Department, will host a free back-to-school safety day from 10am to 1pm at the Reeves Elementary School (240 Lexington Street) in Woburn.

The event aims to to remind parents and kids of important safety tips as they start the school year. The Wilmington Police Department will be participating in the event.

Visitors will be able to visit information booths hosted by the District Attorney’s Office and community partners to receive resources on bullying, cyber-safety, bike safety and more as they prepare for back-to-school.

Visitors will also be able to explore emergency vehicles from public and private partners across the state including S.W.A.T. Trucks, Military Humvees, Motorcycles, Fire Trucks and much more. There will be K-9 demonstrations by trained specialty dogs and their law enforcement handlers. Car seat inspections and installations will be available. Blades, the Boston Bruins mascot, will pose for photos. Free refreshments will be provided.

Stop by the Winchester Hospital information booth for roadway and bicycle safety information along with hands-on helmet fitting provided by Lahey Hospital’s Trauma Center. Free helmets will distributed to the first 200 participants.

#3) Sobriety Checkpoint In Middlesex County

The Massachusetts State Police will be holding a Sobriety Checkpoint in Middlesex County on Saturday, September 28, 2019 into Sunday, September 29, 2019.

Wilmington is one of the 54 cities and towns in Middlesex County.

The purpose of the Sobriety Checkpoint is to detect and remove drivers who are operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from the roads. The Checkpoint also raises the public’s awareness of law enforcement’s efforts to combat this serious issue.

“Any inconvenience to motorists will be minimized with advanced notice to reduce fear and anxiety,” said Colonel Kerry A. Gilpin, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, in the announcement. “The selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary. Safety will be assured.”

The Sobriety Checkpoint is funded through a grant provided by the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

#4) Meet Spot The Robot At Wilmington Library

The Wilmington Memorial Library (175 Middlesex Avenue) is hosting Spot The Robot at 10am in the Meeting Room. Boston Dynamics Spot “dog” robot is a four-legged machine designed for indoor and outdoor operation. It can go up and down stairs, navigate its way around a building, and even load a dishwasher! Come and see this amazing robot for yourself. There will be a short lecture in the conference room followed by an outside demonstration. Register HERE.
