Wilmington School Committee To Post Superintendent Contract & Collective Bargaining Agreements Online

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Public Schools’ collective bargaining agreements and the school superintendent’s contract will soon be posted on the district’s website.

The School Committee recently conducted the first reading of a new policy it plans to adopt later this month:

“Subject to the ratification of collective bargaining agreements by the School Committee and the various bargaining units, the Wilmington Public Schools will post on its District website all collectively bargained contract agreements.

Subject to the signed contract agreement between the School and the Superintendent of Schools, the Wilmington Public Schools will post on its District website the Superintendent of Schools employment contract which will be redacted for personal information as appropriate.”

This measure will “make the district’s most important educational contracts more easily accessible to the public,” according to School Committee member David Ragsdale.

“It is indeed the case that some school districts do [post these contracts],” added Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand. “It’s not uncommon.”

The School Committee previously agreed to post these contracts back in February, but first wanted a policy drafted and approved. The School Committee’s Policy Subcommittee  recently reconvened from an hiatus. This matter was one of the first items they addressed.

The initial request to publicly post the district’s collective bargaining agreements and the superintendent’s contract came from Finance Committee Chair John Doherty.

Doherty pointed out that many municipalities and school departments have begun voluntarily posting their contracts online in the name of transparency, rather than requiring taxpayers to file public records requests. He’s happy to see Wilmington following suit.
