WILMINGTON, MA — At Monday night’s Board of Selectmen Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull took a moment to highlight some good work from three Wilmington Girl Scouts — Rachel George, Taylor Mills, and Tanya Mollo.
“A group of Girl Scouts — Cadet Troop 65083 — has undertaken efforts to establish storage containers at Silver Lake for the purpose of collecting used fishing line,” Hull told the Selectmen. “[The girls] came in and met with Recreation Director Karen Campbell, DPW Director Mike Woods, and myself about six weeks ago.”
The girls built two containers (or “collectors”), which were recently installed by the Wilmington DPW at Silver Lake. They are located on the fishing pier and in the grassy area along Main Street.
“The girls identified an issue — they noticed all the fishing line tangled along the docks. They were concerned about the impacts the lines might have not only on the ascetics, but also on the fish, so they presented us with a proposal,” continued Hull. “Karen and Mike worked directly with them.”
“I want to acknowledge their efforts,” added Hull. “Going out and identifying an issue and then taking some action to solve it is a great practice.”
The three girls completed this “Take Action” project as part of their efforts to earn the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadet can achieve. The award is attained by scouts who show organization, determination, and a dedication to improving their community by identifying a problem, building a team, researching a solution, and successfully implementing a plan to achieve their desired outcome.
