Wilmington DPW & Public Buildings Dept. Complete Dozens Of Projects To Get Schools Ready For Opening Day

WILMINGTON, MA — School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand recently publicly thanked the Wilmington’s Public Buildings Department and Department of Public Works for their efforts in getting each school’s building and grounds ready for the First Day of School.

In memos to the School Committee, Brand shared many of the projects these two departments successful completed over the school summer break.

The Public Buildings Department:

  • cleaned all schools
  • refinished gym floors at all schools
  • stripped and relined the Woburn Street School gym to include Pickle Ball
  • tested and inspected all fire extinguishers and alarm systems at all schools
  • inspected and services all boilers and heating systems at all schools
  • changed all filters and belts, and lubed all univents, air handlers and roof top units at all schools
  • installed new energy efficient LED lighting fixtures at the West Intermediate School
  • moved equipment to set up Tiny Tots and Recreation Department summer programs
  • assisted school department in getting ready for their summer programs by moving equipment and teaching supplies from school to school for the extended year summer program
  • replaced A/C units at several schools
  • installed new ceiling tiles in the 1st first foyer and hallways at the West Intermediate School
  • built a new room for student services at Wilmington Middle School
  • installed new kitchen equipment at Boutwell Early Childhood Center and Shawsheen Elementary School
  • replaced restroom partitions in 1st and 2nd floor men’s room at Wilmington Middle School
  • painted restrooms at Wilmington Middle School and various other areas in school buildings throughout town

The Department of Public Works:

  • painted all crosswalks and school zone stencils at all schools
  • readied all school fields and implemented its turf management plan (passed GMAX concussion testing at WHS Alumni Field)
  • paved and added new granite to Woburn Street School‘s rear parking lot
  • re-striped drop off lines at Woburn Street School
  • completed road paving projects on [1] Middlesex Avenue (Glen Road to Federal Street); [2] portion of Woburn Street; [3] Hillside Way; and [4] Arlene Avenue neighborhood
  • installed new traffic signals at Middlesex Avenue & Federal Street

“The buildings looked great,” bottom-lined Brand, who noted Central Staff was able to visit each school building during Opening Day on August 27.
