WILMINGTON, MA — This week is the second part of my answers to questions and comments from our community survey conducted last spring. We had well over a hundred responses and a lot of inquiries about WCTV that can be answered in this format.
But before we get going, a reminder: Our Podcast Meet-Up will be held at the studio on Wednesday, August 28th at 7PM. It’s for both beginners and advanced users. Learn how the studio is set up and get tips from other local podcasters about how they produce their programs. WCTV has a LOT of great podcasts right now. To learn more and to RSVP, contact Lisa Kapala at lisa@wctv.org.

Comment: I was excited that my in-laws were able to recently watch the band concert and they live in Arlington.
Perhaps the biggest change in community media (and media in general) over the past 10 years is how available everything now is. For so long, you had to be a cable subscriber in Wilmington to watch Wilmington programs. Now, there are LOTS of options for viewers who don’t have cable, are away from the TV or want to watch in another location.
Our website, wctv.org/live, maintains a stream of our channels 24/7. We also stream through the WCTV Mobile App, available for Apple and Android devices. If you download the app, you’ll get a mobile alert whenever we have a live program, including meetings, community events, sports and more!
We’ve also recently launched a channel on Roku. If you have a Roku device, just add the WCTV Streaming Channel. You’ll not only get our live feed, but can also watch videos-on-demand. And if you want to watch through and Amazon Firestick, we’ve set up a special link so that you can watch our live stream fullscreen. Go to your internet browser and open tiny.cc/wctvlive.
We love hearing stories of how people watch WCTV outside of town!
Comment: Please add library events.
To be fair, we do quite a few. But I know what you’re saying. The library has a lot of great programs for kids and adults. Looking at the calendar, there are often 1-2 events per week that we find interesting.
But there is a staffing element to this. We don’t have someone dedicated to just getting events around town. And even if we did, there are also great events at the Senior Center, Silver Lake and elsewhere that would also warrant coverage. We do our best to get a balance of events around town that appeal to all parts of our Wilmington audience.
Here’s where you can pitch in: Anyone in Wilmington can become a WCTV member, check out a camera, and record an event around town. You’d be surprised how easy it is to learn about the gear. If you love what the library does and want to share what they do with the community, let us know and we’ll get you signed up and trained! Contact Lisa Kapala at lisa@wctv.org to learn more.
Comment: Wish I could schedule programming on my cable box to record.
You can! But it’s a little more complicated than recording your favorite primetime shows.
We’ve heard from a number of viewers who will manually set up record times on Comcast 9 or Verizon 37. Most DVRs will allow you to record the same time period each week and then auto-delete the older blocks of time.
Want to record the Selectmen? Set your recording for Mondays from 7P-11P. School Committee is Wednesday from 7P-11P.
We’ve also created some special program blocks that you can record each week and get the latest content that falls into specific categories. Wildcat TV (sports, concerts, WHS events) airs each Friday and Sunday from 7-11P. Community events and interviews are Tuesday and Saturday from 7-11P.
Comment: I keep waiting for the Class of 1995 Graduation, Promenade and other events. You seem to have others from that era.
We’ve looked. Unfortunately, at some point in the past 26 years, something appears to have happened to a box of VHS tapes labeled “1995”. We literally still have hundreds of VHS tapes to digitize as part of our archiving project, but so far, no sign of these 1995 videos. We’ll keep our eyes peeled.
There are now nearly 1,300 videos on our WCTV Archive page dedicated to content from Wilmington’s history dating back to 1986. You can find a link on our home page, wctv.org. And each week, we profile a new video as part of our Throwback Thursday segment. Old programs air each Thursday from 12-3P and then from 7-10P.
