WILMINGTON, MA — For more than 50 years, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has hosted an extraordinary program for 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students at their summer home in the Berkshires known as the Tanglewood Music Center. This residential education program brings together over 400 performing arts students from all across the Commonwealth for Days In the Arts (DARTS). During these five days at DARTS, students are immersed in the arts and engage in workshops and performances as well as attend cultural experiences at venues such as the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Shakespeare and Company, Norman Rockwell Museum, and of course, Tanglewood with performances by the BSO. Students have the opportunity to enroll in courses for vocal music, instrumental music, theater/drama, dance, and visual arts as well as creative expression courses where they jumpstart their creative imaginations for the day.
The Wilmington Public School district has been partnering with the BSO and participating in the DARTS program since 2002, beginning with just two students. There are more than 35 other participating communities in THIS program including Chelsea, Lawrence, Cambridge, Newburyport, Lee, Otis, Worcester, Newton, Springfield, North Reading, Beverly, Boston, Lynn, and Wellesley. This year, the WPS Performing Arts Department faculty members nominated more than 55 students in Grades 5-7 for participation in this program. The BSO assigns a specific number of student slots for each participating community, and Wilmington received 6 student slots this year for selection by random drawing. Additionally in May, the BSO opens up alternate slots that go unused by other districts for random drawing as well. Six more Wilmington Performing Arts students were selected to fill some of these slots.
This year, the Wilmington Public Schools Performing Arts Department is proud to be sending the following 12 students to the Days in The Arts Program at Tanglewood for Summer 2019:
