LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reader Encourages EVERY Resident To Make Their Voice Heard & VOTE On April 27

To my fellow Wilmingtonians,

I propose to you an endorsement that only a few of us have gotten behind. In all districts across this great nation, people have executed their right to vote, as well as their right not to vote. Do we want to see change? Yes. Do we want to preserve our traditions? Absolutely. So is voting the right answer? Well, my friends, it’s a start.

This open letter to you is non-partisan. I have an idea who I am voting for, but the campaign is not over yet, and I refuse to back anyone publicly because I believe the candidates’ words speak for themselves. Their actions, however, are for we to hold accountable. That is what voting is all about. If someone has stood by their words with their actions then you vote for them. If you want something different from what they are not promising or going back on their word, you vote them out. What you cannot do, is sit idly by and complain about the status of the Town having taken no action.

Certainly, there is the argument of “I didn’t vote, so I didn’t create this problem.” While part of that is true, you hindered your own voice. Vote for someone if you vote for no one. Do you know how many votes Mickey Mouse gets in every election? I’ve gotten a few votes in Town elections since I moved here in 2016, and I never ran for anything.

My point is, even if you think your voice isn’t being heard, it is. If you don’t get out and vote, it may never be. You don’t have to be in agreement with either side, or with me for that matter, but you have to speak up. This is how change is made. This is how traditions are preserved. With record-low voter turn-out in times when we are more divided than ever, it is time for everyone to speak up in whatever direction they so choose.

My wife and I are proud voters, and like most Americans don’t always agree politically, but we do agree taking action is better than taking no action. So please get out on Saturday April 27th and rock this local vote, because no matter how small your town or your place in it; every voice counts. See you soon, Wilmington.

Respectfully,

Adam J. Silva
