Dear Fellow Residents,
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Wilmington Board of Selectmen. My wife and I have lived in Wilmington for 16 years and have 3 boys who all attend Wilmington Public Schools. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and have a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and Business with a minor in Economics from St. Thomas University in Miami. I have been a small business owner for almost 20 years.
As Selectman, these are just some of the things I want to help rectify:
Controlling Growth: Growth in our town is great, however, overcrowding can become an issue. We are already seeing that strain within our schools, especially in our new high school. If we keep growing at this rate, we will have overcrowding in our classrooms, which will be detrimental to all of Wilmington’s students. I have experienced this before and I am concerned we are heading in that direction.
Promote economic development: There are many empty businesses and vacant lots around town. We need to be more appealing to other communities and business owners and show that Wilmington can be a profitable location to not only start a business but also operate established businesses. We need to ensure that we are bringing the right businesses into town. Businesses that will have longevity and that will attract consumers not only from Wilmington but from our surrounding towns.
Senior Housing: Affordable senior housing has been talked about for years, but we are no closer to a solution. We need a resolution for senior housing so our elderly residents will have the opportunity to stay in their hometown. We have to take care of our community today as well as plan for the future of all citizens. Our seniors have given to our community over the years; we need to give them the treatment and comfort they deserve.
Youth Programs: We need to address the issues concerning all of our youth sports programs. Enrollment is diminishing and morale is low. As an active volunteer and parent in youth sports, this trend is an issue for the recreational activities available for our children. We need to rebuild the excitement of what it means to represent this town in all athletics.
There are roughly 17,000 registered voters in Wilmington – a great number. The disappointing part of this statistic is that ONLY 15% of those registered voters came out for the last town election. That is close to 1 out of every 10 registered voters that decided who won a seat on the Board of Selectmen at the last election. This is a well-knit and passionate community. We need to show that the residents of Wilmington are committed to making our town better by voting for the candidates they want to help make positive changes and represent our community. YOU have a voice in this election and it matters. I used to be a person who thought my vote didn’t matter. How could my one vote make a difference? After seeing some of the decisions being made, I realized that my vote is important and it counts and so does yours.
Many people may consider me an outsider as I did not grow up in Wilmington. However, I am truly ingrained in this community. I am proud to call Wilmington my hometown and even prouder to be raising my sons here. I want to be a new voice for the people, those who have lived here for many years as well as those who may be newer to Wilmington, like myself. I want to help bring our community together and make decisions that are favorable for everyone, now and for the future. Let’s make a change together. I want to be a fresh voice for Wilmington.
I ask that you come and make your vote count and your voice heard on Saturday, April 27 by voting for the people you want to see on the Board of Selectmen. I hope that you will vote for me, Mark Maselli, for one of the two open three-year Selectmen seats. I am confident I will be a hard-working representative for all the citizens of Wilmington.
If you are not a registered voter, I strongly encourage you to register before the deadline of April 8th.
Please visit my social media sites on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for regular updates and information on my candidacy and feel free to reach out to me at any time. It’s time for a fresh voice for our town – a town that holds so much potential.
Thank you,
Mark Maselli
