WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s Board of Selectmen Meeting, Wilmington Town Manager Jeff Hull provided an update on the town’s relationship with its current trash and recycling collector, Russell Disposal, which has been in breach of contract over its inability to provide the town with a performance bond.
“There has been no change with respect to the status of the performance bond required to be in place from Russell Disposal, Inc.,” said Hull. “And they had indicated that they do not anticipate obtaining a performance bond in the foreseeable future.”
Hull noted that Wilmington DPW Director Mike Woods is closely monitoring the company’s service.
“The company continues to collects sold waste, recyclables and yardwaste consistently,” Hull reported in a memo he summarized for the board. “While there are periodic calls about a missed collection or barrels that are not reset upright in the same location at the curb, their service has been consistent and, generally speaking, good.”
Hull noted the town will be continue to monitor market conditions and will continue to inquire about obtaining a performance bond. Hull noted Wilmington is taking the same approach as other communities that have contracts with Russell, including Chelsea and Walpole.
Earlier in the meeting, Selectman Greg Bendel noted that he had conversations with the Town Manager Jeff Hull about possibly extending leaf pick-up by a week due to the many rainy weekends this fall.
“Russell wanted $6,500 to extend leaf pick-up one week,” revealed Bendel. “I didn’t think that was very reasonable… I was disappointed to see that for a group of folks who are having a difficult time getting their act together, they weren’t willing to work with the town for that extra week.”
