SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: WHS Robotics Team Off To Successful Start With 50+ Members, Generous Donors

WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s meeting, the Wilmington School Committee unanimously approved a donation of 15 Windows laptops — valued at approximately $6,750.00 — from Amazon Robotics to the Wilmington High School Science Department to assist them with their new Robotics Team and STEM activities.

The Robotics Team’s co-advisors, teachers Julie Kim and Marlene King, were on hand to briefly discuss the club’s early success.

“We have over 50 signed up for the robotics team at the Middle School… We had 59 members at the High School. So, we have over 100 students from Grades 6 to 12 that’s interested,” said Kim. “It’s pretty amazing. We didn’t realize the interest level would be this high, this fast.. When you have 50 kids running to your room, that’s pretty amazing. They just want to stay, play, build, and do science.”

“Last Friday, we took 22 students to Amazon Robotics. All had a great time,” noted King. “They gave us a nice dynamic presentation and the students saw robots in action.”

Amazon Robotics Chad Wright, from Wilmington, facilitated both the field trip and the donation. His daughter is currently a student in King’s physics class.

In addition to the donation of the 15 laptops, King and Kim both thanked the Cummings Foundation for its recent $100,000 grant donation.

“Each robot costs about $1,000. In addition to that, we had to buy all sorts of supporting stuff, including computers,” noted Kim. “If not for the grant, we wouldn’t have been able to start the robotics team.”

Four members of the Wilmington High’s Robotics Team also spoke to the School Committee and showed off one of their creations.

“Robotics is pretty cool. It’s something I very interested in,” said one student. “I’m very passion about this group.  A lot of the [members] are passionate too.”
