Boutwell Early Childhood Center Adds A “Buddy Bench”

WILMINGTON, MA — A buddy bench was recently added at the Boutwell Early Childhood Center.

Students utilize the bench during recess when they are having difficulty finding a friend or group to play with. If a child is seen sitting alone on the bench, classmates are trained to approach the child and ask him or her to play.

The Boutwell is one of nearly 2,000 schools in the United States that hosts a Buddy Bench as a means of spreading inclusion and kindness amongst its students.

The bench was funded by the Boutwell’s Parent Advisory Council and installed by Wilmington’s Department of Public Works.

There is also an effort, spread-headed by three third grade students, to bring a Buddy Bench to the Shawsheen Elementary School.  If you’d like to assist in their efforts by making a financial donation, please contact the Wilmington Educational Foundation at wilmingtonedfoundation@gmail.com. The bench costs approximately $800.
