WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a recent Wilmington Little League game summary:
AAA: Astros outlast Cardinals, 17-16, on Saturday, May 5 at Boutwell Field
In a game full of offense, the Cardinals’ Ethan LaConte had two strong innings on the mound limiting the Astros to three runs. Jackson Guy also had a strong inning allowing just one run as he was helped with some great defense by Henry Almeda at second base to get out of a jam, allowing the Cardinals to stay close and take the lead going into the bottom of the 6th. Offensively, the Cardinals put the bat on the ball all game long. Leading the hit parade was Ian Heos with four hits while J.R. Haggerty put the Cardinals up by a run with a 3-run inside the park homer to center field in the top of the 6th inning.
Despite the score, there was also some excellent pitching by Astros Joe Gronemeyer, John Roofe, and Joe Fennelly (who struck out six in two innings). They kept the ball around the plate and made the Cardinals work for every run. They relied on some outstanding defense behind them, including one of the plays of the game by Kyle McDonald who snared a screaming grounder at second and ran to the base for an unassisted putout to end an inning. Kevin Pruslin made another great play at second (for the second game in a row) and Joe Cavanaugh made a nice running catch at first base. Evan Cummings, Tim Watson, Ronnan Scafiddi, Roofe, and Gronemeyer were among many other defensive standouts. Of course the big story was the bats. Ethan Afthim kept hitting the ball well, driving in the team’s first run and scoring later after a walk. Watson singled all three times up. Jake Cronin, Cummings, and Gronemeyer singled twice each, and Cavanaugh, Scafiddi, Roofe, and Fennelly supplied the other hits. Pruslin and McDonald reached base as well. Everyone then went home to rest their legs!
Rookies: Astros tie Braves on Saturday, May 5 at Boutwell Field
The Braves visited the Astros on Saturday and played to a tie. Ryan Doherty and Anthony Aborn each collected a couple of hits for the Astros while Stephen Zella and Michael Duffy played all-star level defense for the Braves.
