WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a recent Wilmington Little League game summary:
AAA: Astros beat Rays, 12-9, on Monday, April 23 at Boutwell Field
The Astros bats came alive with many contributing. Ronnan Scafiddi singled three times while Tim Watson singled and ripped a triple. John Roofe and Joe Gronemeyer both singled and doubled. Evan Cummings, Luke Kitanov, and Will Poyant added hits as well. Ethan Afthim scored what turned out to be the winning run after working a walk in the 5th.
Kyle McDonald, Joe Cavanaugh, Jake Cronin, and Kevin Pruslin were among many who helped limit the Rays’ running game covering bases in the infield, being there for catchers Joe Fennelly and Kitanov who were both terrific behind the plate for the second time in two days.
The pitching was outstanding as Poyant (9), Roofe (3), and Kitanov (2) combined for 14 strikeouts!
Although the Rays lost their season opener, there were a many bright spots. Luke Cushing pitched three strong innings striking out 8 batters while also getting on base twice. Riley Young also pitched well striking out three batters in two Innings of work while hitting a double. Offensively Braedon Almas and Kenneth Branley reached base three times and scored two runs each.
