WILMINGTON, MA — As the Wilmington School Committee is poised to sign a contract with Dr. Glenn Brand next week to become the town’s next Superintendent of Schools, it appears Wilmington Assistant Superintendent Sean Gallagher will soon be leaving the district.
On Monday night, the Newburyport School Committee unanimously voted to enter into contract negotiations with Gallagher to become their next Superintendent.
Gallagher beat out fellow finalist Anthony Colannino, president of the Learning and Teaching for Growth in Greater Boston. Gallagher and Colannino were selected from a pool of 24 candidates.
Gallagher visited Newburyport for the first round of interviews with the School Committee on February 13. Newburyport School Committee members followed up with a site visit to Wilmington on February 28. After being delayed due to snowstorms, Gallagher’s final round of interviews took place Monday night in Newburyport, when he won the support of Mayor Donna Holaday and the other six School Committee members.
Gallagher has been with the Wilmington school district for 21 months, having been appointed Assistant Superintendent at a special School Committee Meeting on June 27, 2016.
Prior to arriving in Wilmington, Gallagher was Principal of Beverly High School for ten years (2006-2016). During his tenure, Beverly High was named a “Breaking Ranks Showcase School” by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Gallagher oversaw the implementation of several successful innovative programs in Beverly, including a 1:1 laptop initiative, a Freshman Academy, a Student Exchange Program, and a Senior Internship Program. Gallagher also coordinated the new Beverly High School building project.
Gallagher began his education career as a health teacher at an Everett elementary school (1994-1995), Special Education Teacher at Lynn Alternative High School (1995-1997), and health teacher at Salem High School (1997-2003). He then served as the Dean of Students and Athletic Director (2003-2005) for Salem High, before becoming Assistant Principal at Beverly High School (2005-2006). Gallagher also served as an adjunct professor at Endicott College (2009-2014).
Gallagher would take over for Superintendent Susan Viccaro, who is retiring at the end of the school year after five years in the position.
