Wilmington Community Television Launches SmartPhone App

WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a message from WCTV Executive Director Shaun Neville, published on his station’s blog this week:

Wilmington Community Television is very excited to announce the launch of our SmartPhone App.  This is the latest technological step forward for us and will put all of our programs, podcasts, schedules and live streams into one place on your phone.  It’s the result of more than six months of work, as we’ve been crafting an app that is easy to use and has the content you’re most interested in.

Some may wonder: Why would I want a WCTV app on my phone?

We don’t expect you to check in every day like you do with Facebook.  And we don’t anticipate you’ll get hooked on our content like Candy Crush (although who knows?).  What this app offers that others don’t is Wilmington-based content.

You’ll see the top of the app features either a blog post about station activity or a recap of recent programs to make it on our air.  From there, you’ll find links to our TV schedules, live streams and video-on-demand.  We’ve also embedded our community calendar, listing events from across Wilmington.  And, there’s a slideshow of the latest pictures we’ve posted on our Facebook feed.

One of the features we’re most excited about is the ability to send push notifications.  We don’t anticipate sending them often, but it will allow us to directly reach you when live programming is about to hit our air.  It could be a Selectmen or School Committee meeting; or it could be a big community event or even a live Wildcat sports game.  So be sure to turn notifications ON when you install the app if you want these sorts of alerts.

While we often lament the fact that our TV channels are in standard-definition away from the tier of programming most people watch, the app gives us a chance to be on a level playing field with other commercial TV stations, which use content and alerts to inform viewers and drive people to their TV channels.

We hope you’ll check out the app in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.  Just search for “WCTV” and you should see our Apple logo.  If something doesn’t work or you’re having trouble navigating a page, let us know.  While we’ve been testing this out for a few weeks, there are sure to be a few wrinkles to iron out. We look forward to hearing your feedback!
