Online Petition Started To Bring A Swimming Team To Wilmington High

WILMINGTON, MA — On Friday night, a Change.org petition began circulating in Wilmington social media circles, urging Wilmington Athletic Director Tim Alberts to start a co-ed high school swim team to compete during the winter sports season.

Less than 24 hours later, more than 175 parents and residents have already publicly pledged their support for the idea.

“Let’s provide the 900 students at Wilmington High School with the opportunity to pursue an activity they love and represent their high school in competition with area schools as student-athletes,” reads the petition. “We believe a swim team would help our children grow in character, physical development, skills, and encourage them to be confident and healthy team players.”

Every school district surrounding Wilmington — Andover, Billerica, Burlington, North Reading, Reading, Tewksbury (with Methuen), and Woburn — has swim teams, as does the Shawsheen Tech.
