WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington School Committee Manny Mulas has announced that he will not be seeking re-election to the Committee when his term expires this spring.
“I’m proud to have been a member of the School Committee for the past six years,” said Mulas. “It’s been a privilege to serve the town during my two terms.”
While Mulas gave very serious consideration to seeking a third term, he decided to step away, in large part, due to the travel associated with his job.
“I am going to begin traveling a lot more for work,” explained Mulas. “If I will no longer be able to put forth 100% as a School Committee member, it wouldn’t be fair for me to stay on, so this is the right thing to do.”
It was important for Mulas to declare his intentions at the beginning of the election season to allow for other potential candidates to step forward.
Mulas, who was a member of the Wilmington High School 4.0 Campaign Committee, points to the opening of the new high school as his favorite memory from his time on the board.
While he still plans to stay involved and volunteer in the community, Mulas says he will certainly miss being a School Committee member.
“I’ll miss being involved with what’s going on in the schools. It was great to see how it all worked and to have a say in it, especially with two kids in the system,” said Mulas. “I enjoyed being part of the School Committee and am grateful to my current and former colleagues.”
“I want to thank everyone who supported me over the years in the elections I took part in,” Mulas reflected. “I especially am thankful to have worked so closely with Joanne Benton and Paul Ruggiero. I’m so thankful that I was given this opportunity.”
Mulas still has a lot left to accomplish over the final three months of his tenure, including selecting Wilmington’s next Superintendent of Schools.
“One reason I considered staying on was to keep continuity with the board as a new Superintendent comes in, but – at the same time – having a new School Committee member start fresh with a new Superintendent makes sense too,” said Mulas.
Wilmington will go to the polls on Saturday, April 28 to elect two Wilmington School Committee members. While Mulas won’t be on the ballot, his colleague MJ Byrnes is seeking her third term on the School Committee. There are currently no other candidates in the race. Interested candidates can retrieve nomination papers from the Town Clerk’s Office and return them, with at least 50 valid signatures from town voters, by Friday, March 9.
