WILMINGTON, MA — Alexander W. Maio, age 84, of Wilmington, formerly of North Reading and Arlington, died peacefully at home on November 23, 2017.
Alexander was born on October 28, 1933, in Arlington, MA; he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Maio. Alexander was raised and educated in Arlington. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1951 and served aboard the USS Joyce. Alexander was honorably discharged in September of 1954 after proudly serving the Country during the Korean Conflict.
Alexander married the “love of his life”, Sylvia Ferrari, in 1961; the couple shared over 56 years of marriage and raised three wonderful children. Alexander and Sylvia lived in North Reading for more than a dozen years before settling in Wilmington in 1975.
Alexander was a hard worker; he started in the Supply department at New England Telephone and worked his way up through the company. He retired as a telephone technician for AT&T/ following many years of dedicated service to the phone company. Alexander also worked as a custodian and sexton for the Old South Methodist Church in Reading for over 10 years where he was well loved and made many friends.
In his spare time, Alexander, enjoyed trips to Cape Cod with his family, boating, and working in his yard. Alexander was very creative; he loved to “tinker” and make “one of a kind creations” out of whatever material he had available.
Alexander will be fondly remembered for as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and friends; especially his grandchildren who he adored. Alexander was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Alexander was the beloved husband of 56 years to Sylvia (Ferrari) Maio, loving father of Theresa Morrow & her husband Steven of Bedford, Richard Maio & his companion Darlene Sutton of Haverhill and Lawrence Maio & his wife Nan of Ozark, AL. Adoring Grandfather of Jennifer & Thomas Maio, Joshua, Zachary & Jonathan Maio and Katherine & Elizabeth Morrow. Cherished son of the late Frank and Mary (Marrotta) Maio, dear brother of the late Margaret D’Angelis, Madeline Erickson, Virginia Westgate, Peter Maio and Norma Migani. Alexander is also survived by his sister-in-law Darlene Maio as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Tuesday, November 28th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, November 27th from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
