Wilmington Police Nab Driver Going 61 MPH In A 35 MPH Zone With Open Container

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Police Department’s Traffic Unit recently received information regarding a vehicle habitually speeding late at night on Wildwood Street.

The information was forwarded to the department’s evening shift officers. Several attempts were made to locate and identify the offender. On Monday night, Officers Furbush and Cruz set up on Wildwood Street to attempt to identify the “aspiring NASCAR driver.”

At 11:59am, Officer Furbush observed a Ford Mustang traveling on Wildwood Street at a high rate of speed. He was able to confirm the Mustang’s speed with his radar, which showed the vehicle traveling at 61 MPH in a 35 MPH zone.

Officers Furbush and Cruz stopped the vehicle and identified the operator as a 23-year-old man from Dracut. Unfortunately for the driver, he spilled his open beer all over the inside of his car while he was trying to hide it in the back seat. After confirming that he was not intoxicated, the operator was issued a hefty citation for speeding and having an open container of beer in his vehicle.

REMINDER: Not only can speeding be expensive, but it can be dangerous. Speeding while drinking…well that’s just a recipe for disaster! Luckily, police were able to catch this driver before someone got hurt.
