WESTFORD, MA — The Wilmington Wildcats’ Girls U10-6 team traveled north to Westford, this past Saturday, in a Middlesex Youth Soccer League battle.
Westford got out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first half. Undeterred, Wilmington continued to fight back with solid forward ball pressure. Steady midfield play by Ava Drozdowski, Katie Perkins and Molly Guyette, led to a scoring strike by Emma Callahan, off a crisp pass from Mackenzie Libitz.
The back and forth play continued through the first half, keeping fans on their toes. Solid goaltending by Annette Fitzgibbons kept the game tied. In the latter stages of the first half, Claire Connelly and Emma Tarin were able to push the ball forward, down the left-hand side of field. A strong shot on goal by Emma Tarin drove the Westford goalie into the goal, leading to a 2-1 Wilmington lead at halftime.
In the 2nd half, Westford was able to draw the game even. Goaltender Bailey O’Connor played solidly in net the balance of the game. Isabel Carriere and Emma Ebert stymied Westford’s continued pressure during many second half rushes.
With ten minutes to go in the game, Charlotte Warren brought the ball down the right side of the field and fed a pass to the middle of the field, where Emma Tarin was able to shoot the ball past the outstretched arms of the Westford goalie, leading to a 3-2 Wilmington victory.
Wilmington Wildcats Girls U10-6 team moves to 2-1-0 on the season and next plays this Saturday in Burlington.
