WILMINGTON, MA — Anthony L. (Tony) Leverone died peacefully on September 1, 2017 in the home he built for his family in Wilmington. His loving and devoted wife of 69 years Margaret (Hennessy) was there with him at the time of his passing; he was 92.
Tony was born August 22, 1925, the eighth child of the late Frank J. and Mary L. (Mullen) in Charlestown. He graduated from Commerce High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served our country during World War II.
Tony and Margaret (Peg) were married on July 4, 1948 and lived in Charlestown until 1960, when they moved, with three children Diane, Frank, and Stephen, to the house Tony was building in Wilmington. A fourth child, Andrew was born in 1963 and their home was complete (Tony completed the house in 1971). The home Tony and Peg built together is still a safe harbor for a large extended family.
Tony, as a young married man, worked two and sometimes three jobs at a time. Eventually he secured a full-time position with the U.S. Postal Service, honorably serving until his retirement.
Tony attended Saint Dorothy’s Church faithfully and helped with seating and collections for many years. He was active in Little League, was a member of the Tewksbury Knights of Columbus, enjoyed candlepin bowling, and made many friends playing bingo at the Elk’s Club.
After retirement, he kept active by driving a school bus, and playing golf early in the morning. He still holds the Billerica Country Club record for the most holes-in-one by someone named Leverone.
Tony is survived by his wife and children, Stephen’s wife Joan, Andrew’s wife Mary,
sister Catherine Souza, brother Frederick and his wife Elaine, and brother-in-law Bernard Wagstaff.
Tony was the beloved “Grampy” and “Papa” of Lindsay Titulear, the late Allison Leverone, Emily Leverone and wife Caitlin, Stephen Leverone, Jonathan Leverone, Joshua Richard and wife Marisa, Joseph Leverone and partner Jenna Savage, Daniel Leverone, Samantha Leverone, and Private Nicholas Leverone. He was very proud of each and every one.
Tony also loved his two great-grandchildren Matthew Leverone Cavanaugh and Joseph Leverone.
Tony was a man who led by example. Although we miss him terribly, his good works ring loud in our ears.
