$1 MILLION: Wilmington Relay For Life Reaches Fundraising Milestone

WILMINGTON, MA — The Relay For Life of Wilmington-Billerica reached a major milestone this year during its annual American Cancer Society fundraising event. The total raised since the event started here in 2009 recently topped the $1 million mark. The grand total, to date, is $1,024,900.

Despite the rain the night of the event, participants still raised $72,035 this year towards the fight against cancer. The crowd gathered at the Wilmington High School field area late afternoon on June 16th and started setting up their campsites for the overnight stay. But as the opening ceremony started, so did the rain.

It did not dampen their spirits though. Event committee members report lots of fun and enthusiasm.

“The middle school and high school students from both towns were amazing,” said Joe Martiniello. “Their energy level was high and they were really active.”

The Relay for Life honors survivors of cancer. Alba Frasco gave the survivor speech this year inspiring all who listed with her story courage and hope. After the traditional walk by the survivors in attendance, Rocco’s Restaurant of Wilmington provided a survivor dinner for them and their caregivers. This has been a long-standing tradition for Relay.

Giving season is still open. Visit http://www.relayforlife.org/wilmingtonma to make a donation and help win the battle against cancer.
