WHS SOFTBALL: Wildcats Win 5 In A Row, Including Dramatic Extra Innings Walk-Off

WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Softball team defeated Winchester High, 12-0, on Monday, May 22 at Town Park.   The Wildcats were celebrating Senior Night.

Senior Chloe LeBlanc started the scoring off with a 2-run triple.  She later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Jen Dovidio, who had four RBI’s in the contest.  Wilmington broke the game open in the third inning when 14 girls came to the plate.  Antonia Kieran came up twice in the inning — registering a home run, single, and stolen base.  Senior Shannon Horgan had a double and 2 RBI.  Ally Moran was stellar at the plate, going 3-for-3 (2 RBI, 2 runs).

The Wildcats then went on to beat Cambridge, 1-0, on Tuesday, May 23.

Both teams had great pitching and defense.  Each team has only three hits. Wilmington was able to string two of its three hits back-to-back, accounting for the game’s only run.  In the 4th inning, Antonia Kieran ripped a double to center field and then scored on an RBI single by Adele Burton.  The Wildcats got out of a jam in the 7th inning.  With runners on second and third with just one out, great catches by Dana Goulet and Liz Gordon sealed the win for the Wilmington.

The Wildcats kept the winning streak going on Wednesday, May 24, defeating Cambridge in the second of a back-to-back in a thrilling 9-inning, 6-5 walk-off win.

The Wildcats scored two in the first inning.  Jen Dovidio led off with a single and was sacrified to second by Dana Goulet.  Shannon Horgan left on an error.  Antonia Kieran and Adele Burton then both came up in the clutch with RBI singles.

The Wildcats squandered a bases loaded, no-out opportunity in the second inning.

Cambridge scored three in the third inning off of Wildcat throwing errors.  Cambridge scored again in the top of the seventh, taking the lead 4-2.

The Wildcats tied the game at 4 in the 7th inning.  Shannon Horgan led off with a single, followed by an Antonia Kieran single.  Both would score, in part, due to an error.  The Wildcats left a runner on third as the game went to extra innings.

In the top of the 9th, Cambridge scored its 5th run due to some Wildcat defensive miscues.  In the bottom of the 9th, however, Wilmington would not be denied.  Dana Goulet started the rally off with a bunt single.  She moved to second on a walk to Shannon Horgan.  Antonia Kieran laid down a great sacrifice bunt, moving Horgan and Goulet to second and third.  Goulet scored he tying run on an infield out by Adele Burton. Horgan scored the winning run on an Ally Moran walk-off hit.
