WILMINGTON, MA — The WHS Varsity Softball team won its last two games — a nailbiter against Melrose High, 6-5, on Thursday, April 27 and a thrashing of Stoneham, 17-5, on Friday, April 28.
Against Melrose, Wilmington struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning off of walks and infield outs. After falling behind, 3-2, the Wildcats took the lead back in the fifth inning, scoring three runs thanks, in large part, to a Shannon horgan triple. Melrose inched closer, 5-4, but Wilmington picked up another run in the sixth inning, 6-4. The Wildcats stopped a Melrose rally in the 7th inning. With the tying run on third and one out, Dana Goulet made a nice defensive play, freezing the runner at third, and Ally Moran struck out the game’s final batter.
Against Stoneham, Wilmington fell behind early 3-0, surrendering a 3-run homer in the first inning. The Wildcats’ bats responded, however, scoring in every inning of the game. Aliyah Tang (3-3, 4 RBI), Liz Gordon (2-3, 4 runs, 1 RBI), Kayla Bourrell (single, 2 RBI), and Dana Goulet (triple, single, 2 runs) led the way offensively. Morgan McLaughlin recorded her first varsity hit and RBI for the Wildcats. After a rough first inning, Wilmington starter Ally Morgan settled down and finished with 10 strikeouts.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats (5-1) next play Burlington High on Monday, May 1 at 6pm at Town Park.
