Position: Van Driver
Department: Elderly Services
Unit: Non Union
Reporting To: Elder Services Director
Base Wages: MS-1
Hours: 35 Hours Per Week
Definition:
The Elder Services Van Driver provides safe vehicle transportation and well-being of senior citizens to doctor’s appointments, social events, shopping, etc. The position is also responsible for general cleaning of the van.
Essential Functions:
Working under the direction of Elder Services Director and in accordance with all applicable state and local laws and regulations:
- Operates the Elder Services van and other equipment in a safe, proper and legal manner at all times;
- Communicates with Elder Services Department staff by way of cell phone;
- Provides all riders with courteous care and assistance from the door of their residence to the door of their destination, including help descending and ascending stairs, carrying bags, carrying up to 5 grocery bags, positioning walkers or canes and pushing or pulling wheelchairs;
- Reports all incidents or potential problems to appropriate supervisor;
- Reliably adheres to the schedule, and operates in conformance with all policies and procedures
- Cleans the vehicle, performs daily vehicle inspections and reports problems to immediate supervisor;
- Reports to the senior center at the end of each day for next day schedule and final mail pick up/drop off for Town Hall.
- Weekly mileage log pass in at the end of day on Fridays.
- Keep Medical Loaning Shed organized and maintain the amount of equipment.
- Attends training and maintains up-to-date certifications, including, but not limited to, valid State
- Driver’s License and First Aid, CPR, Defensive Driving, and Passenger Assistance Techniques.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to drive a van or like vehicle and possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Excellent driving skills required, as evidenced by a satisfactory driving record and road test.
- Good interpersonal and communications skills with senior citizens and with persons with disabilities.
- Commitment to excellent door-to-door customer service for every rider.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of team, work cooperatively with other staff, departments, and municipalities.
- Flexible schedule and ability to respond to after-hours calls for service.
- Ability to successfully “pass” a Criminal Offender Record Information inquiry (CORI).
Job Environment:
Work is performed both outdoors and indoors. May be subjected to loud noise and exposure to extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Required to traverse uneven terrain, may be required to bend or stoop. Required to enter homes and businesses.
Physical Requirements:
The work is mutually mental and physical. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear for extended periods. Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and arms, crawls and climbs. Specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice and communicate through human speech. Required to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
